    Drupal End of Life

Verve Team Holly Doyle-Wilday Marketing Manager Written By Holly - Digital Marketing Manager at Verve

Along with Magento 1 end of life, Drupal8 end of life is also just around the corner. Originally Drupal 7 was due to end on the same date as 8, November 2021. But due to Covid19 7 has been extended until November 2022.

This does still mean however that 8 is ending, and before you know it, so will 7. The switch to 9 will be an easy decision for some but for others there may not yet be the funding and time to make this happen. Once 8 has ended this year and 7 next year, they may be flagged up as insecure during third party scans as they will no longer be receiving support, and this could cause your business to be open to hackers.

    What will happen?

The sites that still run on Drupal 7&8 will cease to have access to bug fixes or updates. If businesses continue to use Drupal 7 then they could be seen as insecure and if your site deals with transactions then this could have costly consequences if you’re caught out by auditors. The jump from 7 to 9 is a big one. And the company is recommending that businesses choose to move to 8 first, and then 9. Making a smoother move, with less side effects.

There are several options open to businesses that are on Drupal 7. Make the switch to Drupal 9, consider another platform, such as Magento 2, or stay where you are. If you are going to choose the latter then you will need to put some safeguards in place as your site will be vulnerable.

    Make the Switch

Other options for Drupal are a switch to WooCommerce or Magento 2. Both platforms have huge benefits.

WooCommerce offers a wide range of customisable themes, a number of official extensions and boasts security and SEO features.

Magento 2 is a powerful platform, offering improved performance and scalability, advanced SEO features, customisable security features, countless plugins and marketplace integration. So it is certainly worth taking a look at all the options available to you.
