Creating a wave of change with a fast, accessible and a sustainable website for Water Literacy

The Client:
Water Literacy is a nationally recognised educational programme focused on one of the UK’s most pressing and misunderstood environmental challenges: water scarcity. The programme exists to help individuals and organisations better understand where our water comes from, why it is increasingly scarce, and how this scarcity impacts communities, ecosystems and the economy. The programme has been developed through extensive research by industry experts who have dedicated their careers to water management and conservation. It is only possible thanks to collaboration with a group of outstanding partners including Waterwise, Groundwork, Northumbrian Water, Welsh Water, Portsmouth Water, CCW, Southern Water, Virtual College and WRC. Together, they are working to increase water literacy across the UK and inspire real, measurable changes in behaviour.
The Brief:
If you know Verve™, you know that we love building websites, and that we care deeply about our impact on the planet. As a certified B Corp, sustainability and purpose-led work are part of our DNA. So when the opportunity arose to build a website dedicated to environmental education and positive change, it was something we couldn’t pass up. The brief was to create a website that clearly explained the Water Literacy programme, communicated the urgency of water scarcity, and encouraged people to book a place on the course. It needed to work seamlessly across devices, be accessible to all users, and be quick and simple to navigate. Sustainability was also a key priority: the website needed to be low-carbon, efficient, and hosted in a way that aligned with the programme’s environmental values. WordPress was chosen as the CMS to allow for flexibility, scalability and ease of use.
The Design:
The design approach for the Water Literacy website focused on clarity, accessibility and calm confidence. The subject matter is serious, but the experience needed to feel welcoming and empowering rather than overwhelming. We created a clean, modern layout that makes the content easy to understand and encourages users to explore the programme in more depth. Visual elements were kept purposeful and lightweight, with a restrained colour palette inspired by water and the natural environment. Strong typographic hierarchy and generous spacing help guide users through the content, while accessibility best practices ensure the site can be used by as many people as possible. The overall design reinforces trust in the programme while supporting its core message: understanding water is the first step towards meaningful change.
