Verve’s round up in the world of search for February 2017.
Google has started experimenting with a swipeable carousel of ad extension for paid ads in Mobile. Swipeable content is not a new thing on mobile search results, however with ad extensions taking up valuable vertical realistic in devices predominantly designed in a portrait fashion (think of the shape of your mobile phone) it makes perfect sense for Google to reserve as much space in mobile search results for further ads and taking advantage of swipeable technology to house further ad extensions for paid ads.
Back in June 2016 Google rolled out a major colour change to their paid ad label in Google search results from the gold label to a more natural looking solid green label with white text. Many advertisers believe this is a step towards a strategy by Google to blend paid ads in with natural search results, a claim Google strongly denies. Google has made another change to the colour of the sponsored/paid ad label which now features green text and outline on a solid white background. This is being rolled out globally as we speak.
Google has disallowed virtual offices in Google My Business. Quite how Google will regulate this is still unknown, however an update to its guidelines now clearly state that you need to have the virtual office staffed during business hours. Below is quote from the new guideline update.
Service-area businesses — businesses that serve customers at their locations — should have one page for the central office or location and designate a service area from that point. Service-area businesses can’t list a “virtual” office unless that office is staffed during business hours.
Back in June 2015 Google removed Emojis from search results stating webmasters abuse as the reason. Google has no lifted the ban, however it has tightened its restrictions and will now only show Emojis in Emoji related searches.
